Mussels and Shrimp in Wine Sauce
So, I’ve been doing a lot of new things lately. Cooking new recipes, trying new ingredients, making new friends, finding new blogs, and yesterday, I actually joined Twitter. It was a slow day at the office, what can I say? I’ll admit I haven’t been too into Twitter since it came on the scene. However, I do recognize that it is becoming increasingly popular in the business world. I think there are actual applications there, and although I don’t think every business should be out there tweeting, I think that there are some for whom the network is a great place to meet people, market ideas, and gain a following. So, for the sake of professional research and advancement (ha, ha) I signed up. I even put a link on this here bloggy (over on the right) so all of you can join the party.
Anyway, again with the newness, I made mussels for the first time a couple nights ago. Sucessfully! Pretty cute little suckers, and pretty tasty too. I suppose it helped they were doused in wine and butter. But still! And this recipe was surprisingly quick and easy. And boyfriend approved. Try it!
Mussels and Shrimp in Wine Sauce (serves 4, adapted from Real Simple, July 09)
2 lb Mussels
3/4 lb Shrimp (peeled, raw)
3 Tbsp Butter
1 large White Onion, chopped
2 cloves Garlic, chopped
3 big Tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1/2 cup Olives, pitted and chopped (Kalamata or other Greek)
1 cup Dry White Wine
1/2 Parsley, chopped
Start by rinsing the mussels well in a succession of cold water baths. Get all the grit and yuck out! Peel the shrimp and rinse those guys too. Heat the butter in a large skillet and add the onions and garlic. Once those are nice and soft, add the wine and stir until it comes to temp. Then add the tomatoes and olives and liberal S&P. Add the shrimp and shortly afterwards add the mussels. Stir to combine and disperse, then put a lid on it and continue to cook 4-5 minutes until the mussels open up. Stir in the parsley, and spoon out to serve! A side of crusty bread to soak up the sauce was perfect!
